The sea is drowning in waste. Plastic reduction is No.1 topic of today times. The big supermarkets precede, the industry here and there as well. Less plastic, organic degradable plastic, no plastic? Innovative packaging solutions come and go. But will this be the solution ultimately? Will an improvement of something bad lead towards something good?
A completely different way is now being proposed by the pilot project Loop from Terracycle. Based on the “milk-man-model” of the 1950s the company developed, together with big players of the FMCG branch, a closed loop system. The consumer can order goods through the website of Loop or any of the partner websites, which are then brought to him by UPS directly up to the door. After usage the goods have to be put back into the delivery box and collected with the next delivery, up by UPS during the next delivery. The old packaging will be cleaned and reused for the next products – completely without packaging waste. For now the pilot will start in New York and Paris, but if successful, further pilots are already planned in metro areas.
Currently plastic is a topic many brands use for differentiation and image. Long-term solutions and big commitments are not existing yet. If Loop is successful this could lead to real transformation of the way we consume. Eventually the consumer has to decide about the success of the pilot. We are curios and thrilled that maybe someday the “milk-man” will ring at our door.
